Commuting by electric scooter: your checklist

NEXT Mojito electric scooter

An electric scooter can make the work path easier when distance, travel time and charging space fit together. Look through your actual everyday life before choosing a model. A large battery alone does not solve an unsuitable work path or lack of charging possibilities.

Honestly calculate travel time

Even a simple calculation helps: 15 kilometers at a constant 25 km/h lasts 36 minutes. Traffic lights, intersections and slow sections are not yet included. For longer distances, the travel time can therefore become more important than the maximum range. Compare the expected door-to-door time with your previous path.

Check route before model selection

Plan a route that fits the approved category of vehicle. The fastest way for a car is not automatically a permissible scooter route. Also check the return journey in the evening, construction sites and safe parking possibilities. You can find the basics in our Guide to Swiss vehicle rules.

Your charging space must work daily

Where's the scooter at night? Is there a suitable socket there? If the battery can be removed according to the manufacturer: Does its weight fit your way into the apartment? Try wearing before buying. A loading option with the employer is only part of your planning if you are actually allowed to use it and it is reliably available.

Also note the loading time. A short stop at the destination does not replace a full load. Use only a charger shared with the vehicle.

View the range and comfort together

Count all the usual daily routes together. Plan for unfavorable conditions and an unplanned detour additional range. Test whether sitting position, knee angle, mirror and handlebar fit you during a test drive. It also includes shunting and jacking. If you regularly take luggage with you, clear attachment and permissible load.

A plan for days without scooter

In the case of ice, snow or poor visibility, other means of transport can be the more reasonable choice. Those who have to arrive on time every day also need an alternative for workshop appointments and unplanned failures. Consider these costs when comparing with public transport or car.

We take this into the consultation

  • Approximate distance and daily kilometers.
  • Desired driving time and existing driving authorization.
  • Charging space, storage space and possible carrying distance for the battery.
  • Rides in winter, luggage and rides.
