Insuring your electric scooter: what to check before your first ride

Electric scooter Next Mojito

The exact type of vehicle counts when it comes to insurance coverage. The term "electric scooter" alone does not say what insurance and approval you need.

If your scooter is allowed as a motorcycle

To redeem a motorcycle, you need a liability insurance certificate. In addition, in the case of a new vehicle, the test report and in the case of a used vehicle, the previous vehicle identification card. Clear the documents before the first trip with your insurer and the Road Traffic Office.

Three questions for your insurance

  • Is exactly my model covered with its vehicle type and performance?
  • What is insured for damage to other persons or property?
  • What protection applies to theft or damage to your own scooter and battery?

Let the cover confirm for your specific model. Even with a slower scooter, do not assume that an existing private liability covers any case.

Keeping documents at hand

Record model, year of construction, purchase price and vehicle number. If available, keep your vehicle card or manufacturer's documentation ready. This way, your insurance can clearly assign your vehicle.

Compare offers with the same information

If you catch up with several offers, use the same model name and purchase price. Also describe what you use the scooter for and where you usually turn it off. This makes it possible to identify queries and different assumptions. Please provide an understandable list of the services offered and keep them together with the vehicle documentation.

Ask explicitly for the battery and for co-purchased accessories, such as a delivery box. Determine which information the insurance requires and whether the described items are taken into account in the specific offer. The decisive factor is the written answer to your contract; a general product name does not yet answer these questions.

Collect open points before handing over

Note which documents are already available and which are still missing. This may include the exact vehicle number that was not yet known when a first model request was made. Ask your insurer at what time the agreed protection applies and what must be completed before the first trip. Make sure you have enough time before the date of the check-in.

Then keep the contact details of your insurance, the contract documents and the purchase receipt together. In case of a model change or a change of use, you can ask specifically. For the selection of a vehicle you will find our Overview of electric scooters.
